31 Days of Oscar

If you like movies, and who doesn’t, and if you get Turner Classic Movies, you should check in this February as they are having their annual celebration of the Academy Awards, “31 Days of Oscar.”

I’m not a big fan of The Academy Awards anymore. Instead of rewarding excellence, it’s become a horse race, and I’ll leave it at that. However, the good thing is this is one of the few times in the year that TCM gets to go off the board and program outside of what is now the most extensive movie library in the world. They have a lot (MGM before 1985, Warner Bros., RKO, United Artists, etc.) but they don’t have everything (everybody else’s libraries).

There will be theme days. One day will be devoted to best picture, best actor, best actress, best sound, best grip, etc. All movies are uncut, commercial free and shown in their original aspect ratios (OK, not really; check out my favorite site for this, The American Widescreen Museum, to learn more than you ever thought possible about movie aspect ratios). You can get a PDF of the schedule and I will start compiling an iCal of the whole thing and publish it.
