Back to the Nineties
Well, for a while, it looks as if I am going to have to use dial up while I upgrade my DSL account. I have no access now, and so I am using an AOL account I am borrowing from a friend. Whilst I do not miss the dial up thing at all, I must say, it makes for a more secure experience. If you are not hooked up, you are not attacked. Since I must use AOL on the PC (my Mac can login, and hook up just fine, but cannot go to the Web for some reason) this scenario is better than I could have hoped.
When I was looking for a provider and settled on AOL for some reason, I was hoping for shell access. It would have been cool to have a PINE account again.
My review of AOL is that it is better. It certainly looks cooler and is possibly skinable. The only thing I didn’t like about hooking up was that it was not the seamless experience for me and possibly many others that has been in the past. The modem in my PC works just fine. That said, I could not connect to the server that had the access numbers to save my life. I finally figured if I could get on somehow, I could get to keyword: Access Numbers and download them from there.
I finally opted to use the surcharged 800 number just to get access, then I could change access numbers–which I did and now everything is working. Once I got on, I discovered the AOL Dialer, which allows you to use AOL as an ISP without having to launch the AOL client app.
My DSL will be sorted out by the middle of next week. Thnk Ghod.
