Dial Up Not So Bad, but…

This “upgrade” has gotten out of hand. I have finally got them (Earthlink, from here on ELN) to create an order that will not be cancelled in 4-6 hours. However, this new order is going to take them from 10 days to 2 weeks to complete, as my entire line and DSL service had to be re-provisioned. This leaves me in a predicament I have never had to face since 1996–using dial up as my ONLY transport to the net.

I have managed to have high speed in one form or another for that long. Starting with GTE (now Verizon) thru Adelphia ATHome then Adelphia Cable, DirecTV DSL (not satellite), Adelphia again, and finally, ELN. The best was DirecTV. Fastest provisioning and best customer service. The worst is Adelphia, no speed depending on where you live in the service area, down as much as it was up, and shitty service.

The main prob with DSL is that you don’t buy it, generally, from a single provider. Usually there is the phone company (which is the infrastructure), your ISP (which grants you Internet access) and the service provider whch installs and starts up the service and is responsible for tech support. SBC is locking all this up, and that is probably now they can offer DSL for $14.95 a month for a year. Their actual service provider, ASI, is coming in house to SBC and soon, they should have all three spokes for this wheel screwed on.

Anyway, ELN is sending me new equipment and giving me unlimited dial up. Oh well, I really wanted to go with Covad.
