CompUSA… Blows

I haven’t been in years, but my friend Matt has had a sojurn with two iBooks that has been Wagnerian in its repurcussions to him, enough to almost put him and his lovely significant other off of Apple products and into the dark side forever, or, until they get their first virus.

They basically need a machine that can surf the net and do research for the kid’s home schooling. I came to the fore and offered an olde PowerMac 6500/225 the only problem being its not having a modem and Matt and MariBeth are (still) on dialup in their area. I got them a modem and had it shipped to them, and there are still issues which I hope I have resolved with a little phone tech support.

I have said that even though it is possible for them to get two lemon iBooks in a row (a G3 with a bum mother board and a G4 with multiple issues) not to give up on Apple. Apple makes great products and are not in the business of making lemons (although, a lot of times in order to get satisfaction, you have to push all the way to the top).

Most of this is CompUSA’s fault for not wanting to honor their extended warranty to the letter. Apple has some blame to bear, because they do not wish to fully honor their AppleCare committment. And Matt and MB are hard on computers–period.

Anyway, let’s spread the word. CompUSA doesn’t deserve our respect let alone our business. I say that until they decide that it is a good idea to honor a warranty they have sold to you, don’t buy warranties from them at all, if you can help it.

I now have Matt and Mari Beth’s iBook. Apple did some repairs on it neither covered under AppleCare nor covered by the CompUSA extended warranty. I paid the $487 dollars ($450 plus tax) to get it out and I gave Matt and Mari Beth my upgraded powerbook G3. So far, no complaints.
