Hawks and Doves
From Congressman John P. Murtha’s Bio:
U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha has dedicated his life to serving his country both in the military and in the halls of Congress. He had a long and distinguished 37-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring from the Marine Corps Reserve as a colonel in 1990; and he has been serving the people of the 12th Congressional District since 1974, one of only 131 people in the nation’s history to have served more than 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and one of only 224 Members of Congress who have served 30 or more years.
Of course he said this about the war in Iraq:
The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion. The American public is way ahead of us. The United States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq, but it is time for a change in direction. Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk. We can not continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interest of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf Region.
Now the GOP Dirty Tricks Machine (DTM) is trying to discredit him as a flip flopper and a coward. Let’s forget the fact that our own Vice President used five deferrements to get out of Viet Nam free, or that our president lied on a drug test form when he was in the Air National Guard.
Murtha is a Democrat, and he is coming to the fore, doing the honorable thing that millions of Democrats did in the sixties. They abandoned Lyndon Johnson in droves because he lied about Viet Nam. Don’t let anyone tell you any differently; Nixon got into office purely because he was not Lyndon Johnson and Hubert P. Humphery, LBJ’s VP didn’t get into office because he wasn’t Bobby Kennedy.
If Shaun Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and all the other GOP DTM mouthpieces were in the “party of honor and integrity” that they so like to tout, they would call a spade a spade and do what millions of Democrats of conscience did in the sixties. Disavow George W. Bush and his policies in public. There is no dishonor in disagreeing with your elected leaders–that’s what this country is based on you NeoCon gas bags. Murtha has a conscience Shaun and Rush. Instead of sticking to talking points, you might well do yourselves a favor and develop consciences too.
