Samsung Releases First Blu-Ray HD DVD Player
Looks like Samsung has done it (on June 15) and can add another notch to Blu-Ray’s shootin’ iron. The model number is BD-P1000 and it retails for $999.99. That is what it is going for everywhere currently, according to my quick check of C|Net Shopper online The XBox 360 was supposed to support Blu-Ray, but it’s only a 12x DVD player. Looks like Samsung beat all the Blu-Ray partners to the punch. Samsung has also said they are “considering” a hybrid player that will play Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats. They also said they were not going to build a stand alone HD-DVD player anytime soon (unless of course Blu-Ray loses this format war). The advangtages of Blu-Ray are not lost on me (single layer capacity 27 GB, Dual Layer 50), add to it the fact that the Sony PlayStation 3 will have a Blu-Ray drive in it, and all Apple Macintosh computers will have Blu-Ray “SuperDrives” and you can understand my excitement.
